biography a form of nonfiction writing in which a writer tells the life story of another person written in 3rd person point of view usually told in chronological order
autobiography the story of the writer's own life, told by the writer written in 1st person point of view usually told in chronological order
chronological order writing in which one event proceeds to the next in the order in which they actually happened
summary a concise, complete, and accurate overview of a text should only include necessary details that are related to the main topic of the text
main idea the most important part in a text names the topic of the text and why the writer is writing about that topic
simile a figure of speech that uses" like" or "as "to make a direct comparison between two unlike ideas Example: pale as a ghost
lyric poem a highly musical verse that expresses the observations and feelings of a single speaker
thesaurus a reference resource that provides synonyms and antonyms of words
stanza a division of lines in a poem (like the paragraphs of poetry)
metaphor a figure of speech in which something is described as though it were something else Example: Grandpa was a mule. He was so stubborn.
personification a type of figurative language in which nonhuman subjects are given human characteristics Example: lightning danced across the sky.
suffix -ENT added to a verb to make a noun one who does or performs the action Example: student (one who studies)
connotation the feeling associated with a word may be positive, negative, or neutral
denotation the dictionary definition of a word
viewpoint how someone feels or their opinion about a particular topic
synonym words with similar meanings Examples; chilly-cold, enemy-opponent, afraid-scared
memoir a historical account or a type of biography written from personal knowledge or special sources. Usually about a specific experience or event. Not always in chronological order.
cause and effect A text structure where the author gives an event (cause) and lists the effects of that event.
conflicting viewpoints When two or more people see things from a different perspective.
faux pas An embarrassing error or social mistake
vain To have a high opinion of one’s self or appearance.
