Lit Terms

9th Grade Basic Lit Terms

TermDefinition
Characterization The discription of a character. The process through which an author reveals a character's personality.
Foreshadowing A hint about what is to come later in the story.
Imagery Descriptive language used to create mental pictures for the reader.
Prediction An educated guess about what will come next in a story.
Suspense A feeling of nervousness or uncertainty about the outcome of something.
Theme The central idea of a piece of writing that keeps coming up.
Characterization What term best fits this example: "Jim was unusually shy?"
Foreshadowing What term best fits this example: "Shelby found a weapon in the drawer of her brother's desk. It was not supposed to be there."
Imagery What term best fits this example: "It was a dark and dim forest, the weight of the canopy pressed upon my soul."
Prediction What term best fits this example: Based on his history of spending, I think he will blow all of his money on candy at the corner store.
Suspense What term best fits this example: "The wolves had circled the boy and were howling and snapping at his feet."
Theme What term best fits this example: One of the most important things in life is to have somebody.
