Unit 3

TermDefinition
Aufbau Principle states that in the ground state of an atom or ion
Covalent Bond a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms
Electron Affinity an atom or molecule is defined as the amount of energy released when an electron is attached to a neutral atom or molecule in the gaseous state to form a negative ion
Electron Orbitals a mathematical function describing the location and wave-like behavior of an electron in an atom
Hund´s Rule a rule based on observation of atomic spectra, which is used to predict the ground state of an atom or molecule with one or more open electronic shells
Ion a particle, atom or molecule with a net electrical charge
Lewis Dot Structure diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule, as well as the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule
Metallic Bond a type of chemical bonding that arises from the electrostatic attractive force between conduction electrons and positively charged metal ions
Molecular Geometry the three-dimensional arrangement of the atoms that constitute a molecule. It includes the general shape of the molecule as well as bond lengths, bond angles, torsional angles and any other geometrical parameters that determine the position of each atom
Octet Rule a chemical rule of thumb that reflects the theory that main-group elements tend to bond in such a way that each atom has eight electrons in its valence shell, giving it the same electronic configuration as a noble gas
Oxidation Number describes the degree of oxidation of an atom in a chemical compound
Pauliexclusion Principle no two electrons can have the same set of quantum numbers
VSEPR Theory model used in chemistry to predict the geometry of individual molecules from the number of electron pairs surrounding their central atoms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
