| allusion | a reference to something well-known, usually from history, religion, entertainment, mythology "He's strong like Hercules" "Beautiful as the Mona Lisa" |
| simile | comparing two different things using LIKE or AS "Her face was like the sun." "Biff was as strong as a bull." |
| metaphor | comparing two different things directly (not using like or as) "Winter is a cruel old man." "Today was torture." |
| personification | giving human traits to non-human things "The trees danced in the wind." "The alarm clock's screaming woke me up." |
| hyperbole | extreme exaggeration "This must way about two million pounds." "I could eat a horse." |
