October Reading Terms (Poetry)

allusion a reference to something well-known, usually from history, religion, entertainment, mythology "He's strong like Hercules" "Beautiful as the Mona Lisa"
simile comparing two different things using LIKE or AS "Her face was like the sun." "Biff was as strong as a bull."
metaphor comparing two different things directly (not using like or as) "Winter is a cruel old man." "Today was torture."
personification giving human traits to non-human things "The trees danced in the wind." "The alarm clock's screaming woke me up."
hyperbole extreme exaggeration "This must way about two million pounds." "I could eat a horse."
