A&P Vocab 6 Lesson 4.1 Bone Tissue
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| articular cartilage | Cartilage that surrounds and protects the epiphysis. |
| bone marrow | Specialized flexible tissue found in the medullary cavity. There is a yellow and a red type. |
| cortical bone | Also known as compact bone, this bone tissue is dense and hard with little flexibility. |
| diaphysis | The hollow shaft of the bone composed of cortical bone tissue. |
| epiphyseal plate | The main site of longitudinal growth of the long bones |
| epiphysis | The bulbous endings of the long bones |
| Haversian canals | Major passageways running in a lengthwise direction through the bone. |
| Haversian system | Also known as the "osteon", it is the structural unit of surrounding the Haversian canals. |
| hematopoiesis | The process of blood cell formation within the bone marrow. |
| lacunae | Tiny cavities that are laid out in concentric circles called lamellae around the Haversian canals. |
| medullary cavity | A center hollow space inside most of the long bones, such as those in the arms and legs. |
| ossification | The process of bone formation which predominately takes place in the fetus up into infancy. |
| osteoblasts | Specialized bone cells that carry out the work of building new bone tissue |
| osteoclasts | Specialized bone cells that carry out the breakdown of bone matrix to provide the body with needed minerals such as calcium and phosphorous. |
| osteocytes | Mature bone cells. |
| perforating (Volkmann’s) canals | Where multiple Haversian systems are joined by canals running sideways that interconnect the Haversian canals. |
| periosteum | A fibrous connective tissue membrane which surrounds and protects the diaphysis |
| remodeling | Caused by the constant activity of the osteoblasts and osteoclasts. |
| trabecular bone | Also known as spongy bone, this bone tissue is not dense and displays a Swiss cheese or sponge-like appearance. |
