Intro Pulse

QuestionAnswer
pulse The pressure wave that occurs as each heartbeat causes a surge in the blood circulating through the arteries.
normal adult pulse rate 60-100 bpm
tachycardia fast heart rate
bradycardia slow heart rate
arrhythmia irregular heartbeat
pulse volume strength of the pulse- may be described as weak/thready, normal, bounding
Pulse rhythm the pattern of the beats and intervals between the beats- described as regular or irregular
stethoscope bell detects low-frequency sounds such (but not limited to) as heart murmurs
Stethoscope diaphragm Used most often for high pitched sounds (breath, bowel, and normal heart sounds)
temporal pulse pulse located at the temples (each side of forehead)
carotid pulse the pulse felt along the large carotid artery on either side of the neck- most commonly used during CPR
brachial pulse the pulse felt in the upper arm- bend of the elbow
radial pulse the pulse felt at the wrist- most commonly used pulse
femoral pulse pulse of the femoral artery felt in the groin
popliteal pulse Pulse felt at the back of either knee; lower part of femoral artery
dorsalis pedis pulse pulse located on top of the foot
apical pulse pulse taken with a stethoscope and near the apex of the heart
pulse rate the number of pulse beats in a minute
