| protagonist | the main character in a literary work (the "hero") |
| antagonist | a character(s) or force in a literary work that opposes the protagonist |
| character foil | a character who provides a striking contrast to another character for the purpose of cslling attention to particular traits possessed by the main character. |
| soliloquy | one character alone on stage statin their problems. |
| aside | conversation between 2 or more characters on stage that other characters on stage dont hear. |
| Plot | the sequence of events in a major work. |
| exposition (introduction) | the part of a literary work that provides background information, introduces characters, setting, conflict. |
| rising action | where complications develop and the conflict intensifies in a literary work. |
| climax | the turning point or high pt. in the action, where the greatest change in the main character, or in the story itself change. |
| theme | the writer's message within a lw that is often a perception about life or human nature shared with the reader. |
| irony | contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually exists or happens. |
| situational irony | discrepancy between expected result and what actually results. |
| verbal irony | an implied discrepancy between what is said and what is meant. |
| dramatic irony | occurs when there is a contrast between what a character knows and what another character in the audience knows. |

| foreshadowing | hints or clues to indicate events that will occur later in a narritive. |
