| culture | Beliefs, customs, practices, and behaviors shared by a society or group of people (things like food, language, tools, music, arts, and religion) |
| history | Thinking about and studying the past through analyzing, evaluating, interpreting, and understanding historical evidence |
| physical features | A natural structure or form found on the surface of the Earth (examples: rivers, mountains, deserts, peninsulas, oceans, plateaus) |
| division of labor | Each worker specializes in a particular task or job; each part of a job divided into smaller tasks |
| civilization | A complex society that has cities, a well-organized government, and workers with specialized job skills |
| diversity | Cultural variety; being made up of different elements or parts |
| job specialization | Workers in a community or society perform different tasks; people spend most of their time working at a single job or task |
| agriculture | Another word for farming; includes both growing and harvesting crops and also raising animals (livestock) |
| Neolithic Revolution | Neolithic is a Greek word for “new stone”. The Neolithic Revolution was the historical time when humans moved from hunting-gathering to producing their own food to survive |
| river valleys | A low area between hills or mountains that is also beside a river; the river is used for farming and surviving |
| hunter-gatherer | Early humans who survived by hunting small animals and gathering plants |
| prehistory | The time before humans invented writing |
| technology | Tools and skills that people use to meet their needs and wants |
| nomadic | Moving from place to place to survive; Ancient nomadic people would move to where food and water sources were. |
| migration | The movement of people from one place to another |
| adapt | To change your way of life to suit your new environment |
| irrigation | Watering crops by bringing in water through man-made methods (canals, sprinklers, pipes) instead of relying just on rainwater |
| natural resources | Something found in nature that can be used by humans to meet their needs (examples: light, air, water, plants, animals, soil, etc.) |
| surplus | Having more than is needed |
