Chapter 1

QuestionAnswer
In an experiment, what is the one factor that changes by the scientist? Ex. Giving plant food to one set of plants Independent Variable
In an experiment, what is the second factor that is measured in the experiment? It is what is measured as a result of the factor that is changed. Ex. the height of the plant Dependent Variable
In an experiment the factor or fctors that remain fixed during the experiment. Ex. Amount of water, amount of light. constant/controls
In an experiment, comparisions must be made to a group that doesn get the independent variable. ex. plants with no plant food Control Group
In an experiment, the group that is explosed to the factor that is being tested (the group that is getting the independent variable exposed) Ex. the plants getting plant food Experimental Group
An explanation of a natural phenomenon supported by many observations and experiemetns over time. Ex. the earth is a sphere. all living things are made of cells, Evolution Theory
A group of moral values and principals. In scinece we have to be careful how much we advance in science to remain true to sc ience ethical/ethics
a testable explaination of a situation. A possible answer to a question in science where the answer is based on inferences Hypothesis
data that is described in descriptions qualitative data
data that is collected as numbers quantitative data
information that is gathered and gained from observations data
When a scienctist is looking to explain a phenomenon or answer a quetion by doing a set of test that include a control group and experimental group with independent and depenedent variables and controls. Controlled experiment
After an experiment is conducted, the results are checked for originality, competence of scientific method used and accuarcy and then is published for other scientist to used. Conclusion
A direct method of gathering information in an orderly way. The leaves are crispy and brown Observations
The process of taking what you know with what you have learned or observed to draw a logical conclsion. Ex. the plant has died Inference
Look at the collected observations and Data in order to explain patterns and trends. Analyze the Results/Data
What are the steps of the scientific method 1. Ask a question- by making observations and inferences 2. Form a Hypothesis 3. Collect Data - (Controlled and Experimental Groups- making sure to have independent and dependent variables in design) 4. Analyze the Data 5. Report Conclusions
What makes a controlled experiment? IN order to conduct a controlled exsperiment, you have to have a controlled group and experimental group. In the controlled group this group does get the independent variable. The experimental group gets the independent variable.
what are errors that are made in experiments? allowing bias to influnce the results (bias is when someone comes in where their own predecided thoughts on a topic.)
someone who combines a basic understanding of science and its processes with reasoing and hining is said to be... Scientific literate
Why is it important to have peer reviews of all scientific experiments? When other scientist in the same field repeat the experiment and evaluate the results, it supports the experiemnt more and its findings and it prevents false infomration from being printed in scientifc journals.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
