Chapter 2 vocabulary words

TermDefinition
Associative Property of Addition The property which states that the grouping of the addends does not change the sum.
Commutative Property of Addition The property which states that the order in which two numbers are added does not change the sum.
Identity Property of Addition For any number, zero plus the number is that number.
equation A sentence that contains an equal sign (=) showing that two expressions are equal.
unknown An amount that has not been identified.
variable A letter or symbol used to represent an unknown quantity.
minuend A number from which another number is subtracted (the first number in a subtraction equation).
subtrahend A number subtracted from another number (the second number in a subtraction equation).
