| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Products | the substances on the right side of a reaction equation |
| Reactants | the substances on the left side of a reaction equation |
| Arrow | shows the border between reactants and products and an equation and can be read as produces yields make creates but not equals |
| Phase symbols | show the state of a substance (s), (l), (g) or (aq) |
| coefficients | the numbers used in front of formulas when balancing an equation |
| Kinetic energy | is defined as average temperature and measures movement |
| Endothermic reactions | energy is absorbed into the reactant side of the equation. Have +delta H on table I |
| Exothermic reactions | energy is released on the product side of the equation. These have a negative delta H on table I |
| Temperature | average kinetic energy |
| Pressure | The force a substance exerts on things it is in contact with. Measured in atmospheres or kilopascals |
| Volume | amount of space a gas occupies;it is measured usually in liters or milliliters |
| STP | defined values of temperature and pressure found on table A, and used for consistency in reporting things like density, melting pts and boilint pts, and gas calculations. |
| Relationship betweeen stability and energy | The less energy a substance has, the more stable it is. |
