What is a sentence fragment? A group of words that is written as a sentence, but is missing either the subject or a verb. Late again Once again, I am late to class.
What is a run-on sentence? Two or more independent clauses used as a sentence that o not have the required punctuation Yesterday we went to the store I bought an Arizona Tea and a bag of chips I also bought many candies. Yesterday we went to the store. I bought an Arizona tea, a bag of chips, and a many candies.
What is a comma splice? When two independent clauses are connected together with a comma. I was boarding my flight, there was a man sleeping in my seat. I was boarding my flight, but unfortunately there was a man sleeping in my seat.
What is a subordinating conjunction? A word or group of words that joins an independent clause to a dependent clause (e.g., after, since, while, because, before, although, etc.) I was afraid, I peed my pants. Since I was so afraid, I peed my pants.
What is a coordinating conjunction? A word that connects two clauses (e.g., but, and, or, so, for, yet) I was exhausted, I slept through Mr. McCaffrey's class. I was exhausted, so I fell asleep in Mr. McCaffrey's class.
What is a dependent clause? A group of words that cannot stand on its own because the idea is not expressed entirely. Because Uche came to class today Because Uche came to class today, Okey decided to skip.
What is an independent clause? A group of words that can stand on its own because it expresses an idea completely. I like marshmallows. I like marshmallows, therefore I eat them every day for dinner.
