EA Physics Unit 1

Physics Fundamentals

TermDefinition
physics A broad field of study that presents an organized way of modeling and interpreting nature
model A simplified way to describe a complex phenomenon. Used to make predictions.
system A set of objects chose to be part of a model.
si system The agreed upon system of units for scientific measurements.
si base units The 7 SI units from which all other SI units are derived. (*term is plural*)
dimension What you are looking to determine by measuring something (i.e. length, mass, time)
unit Labels a dimension to indicate what system of measurement was used.
derived units These are formed by combining the seven SI base units with multiplication or division (*term is plural*)
tera, T 10^12
giga, G 10^9
mega, M 10^6
kilo, k 10^3
deci, d 10^-1
centi, c 10^-2
milli, m 10^-3
micro, μ 10^-6
nano, n 10^-9
pico, p 10^-12
kilogram The SI base unit for mass
meter The SI base unit for length
second The SI base unit for time
parallax The apparent shift in the position of an object when viewed from different locations. Must be accounted for to take good measurements.
