Vocabulary Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Central Idea | The most important point an author makes about an article or a topic. |
| Textual Evidence | It is evidence from an article used to support the central idea. It is derived from the reading in the text. It is written with quotation marks and page number(s). Ex. The author states, “_____” (1). |
| Explanation | This writing tool is used to express the author’s viewpoint and to explain. It is based on facts, research, or first-hand information. |
| Citations | Textual evidence from an article that is written with quotation marks, (page number) and a period. It is the author’s exact words that are being quoted/ cited. (Citations) Example: “_____” (1). |
| Facts | A writer uses this data to convince the reader to support his opinion. |
| Third Person | Author uses “It, he, she” |
| Transitions | Words or only one word that helps the writing piece connect sentences and run smoothly. They come at the beginning of sentences and are set off by commas. |
| Topic Sentence | A sentence that expresses the central/main idea of a paragraph. |
| Opinions | It conveys (shows) another person's Information/opinions in detail and explains what is difficult to understand. |
| Conclusion | A sentence that summarizes the points that have been made in a writing piece. |
