Yr 8 Linear Equation
Linear Equations
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Sequence | A series of numbers that follow a particular pattern or rule |
| Term | Each number in the sequence |
| Equation | Links to expressions with an equal sign |
| Expression | Does not have an equal sign |
| The inverse operation to addition is | The inverse (opposite) to addition is subtraction |
| The inverse operation to multiplication is | The inverse (opposite) to multiplication is division |
| Flowchart | Can be used to represent a series of operations |
| Input | Is referring the first box in a flowchart |
| Output | Is referring to the last box in a flowchart |
| Backtracking | To work backwards using inverse operations to find the input number |
| Linear equation | Is an equation where the variable/pronumeral has an index (power) of one. Does not contain squared or square roots |
| Variable | A letter or symbol in an equation or expression that may take on different values |
| Pronumeral | A letter used in place of a number Another name for variable |
| To solve an equation | By doing the same to both sides Must always keep the equation balanced "What ever you do to the LHS you must do to the RHS" |
| To make the equation true... The LHS= | must =RHS |
| If you have unknowns 'pronumerals' on both sides of the equation | You need to get all pronumerals onto the one side. Usually moving the smaller coefficient |
| Coefficient | The number in font of the pronumeral. |
