Linear Equations
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| coefficient | the number in front of a variable (multiplying the variable) |
| constant | a fixed value, or a number on it own |
| inequality | a relation between two expressions that are not equal to one another |
| variable | a symbol, such as x, used to represent an unknown value |
| expression | a mathematical phrase that can contain numbers, variables and operation signs: does not have an equal sign |
| term | a constant or a variable in an expression; separated by + and - sign |
| like terms | must have both the same base (or variable) and the same exponent (or power) |
| inverse operations | opposite, reverse operations |
| equation | a mathematical statement containing an equals sign, to show that two expressions are equal |
| operator | a symbol indicating what operation must be done |
| less than | < , fewer than, smaller than, below, under |
| greater than | >, above, over, more than, bigger than |
| Less than or equal to | ≤, at most, maximum, not greater than, no more than |
| greater than or equal to | ≥, at least, minimum, no less than, no fewer than |
