ratio a comparison of two quantities using division can be written 3 ways ex. 3:2, 3 to 2 or 3/2 ORDER is important!
proportion Equation that states that two ratios are equal to one another ex. 1/4 = 3/12
equivalent Ratios ratios that have the same value ex. 1/2 = 2/4
How to determine if ratios are equivalent 1. Divide each ratio and see if they are equal OR 2. Calculate cross products (by multiplying) to see if they are equal
Setting up a proportion Make sure to line up the same units!!! Order is important!!! Ex. Yellow marbles over blue marbles = yellow marbles over blue marbles
Solve for a missing value in a proportion Use cross products to write a one step equation and solve for the variable by dividing both sides by the coefficient. ex. 1/2 = x/4 2x = 1(4) 2x = 4 /2 /2 x = 2
