Hotel Vocabulary
Term | Definition |

Accommodation | A room, group of rooms, or building in which someone may live or stay. In Spanish, we call this ‘alojamiento’. |
Lodgings | Temporary accommodation. |
Inn | A commercial establishment that provides accommodation and other services for guests. |
Resort | A place that is generally frequented for relaxation or pleasure, especially one providing accomodation and recreation facilities for vacationers (e.g. ski resort). |
Hostel | A lodging place, with dormitory accommodation and shared facilities, especially for young travelers. |
Motel | A lodging establishment typically featuring a series of rooms whose entrance is near a parking lot normally located near a major highway. |
Bed and Breakfast | A private home where guests are provided overnight accommodations and served breakfast but usually no other meals. |
Vacancy | It refers to something being unoccupied. If a hotel has it, there are rooms available. |
All-inclusive | A holiday resort that includes a minimum of three meals daily, drinks and other services in the price. |
Amenities | Anything that would benefit a lodging. Examples: WiFi , dining, parking, swimming pools, golf courses, health club facilities, party rooms... |
Complimentary | Free of charge. |
Book | To reserve. |
Single Room | A room with a single bed , i.e. it’s for one person only. |
Double Room | A room in a hotel that has a bed for two adults. |
Twin Room | A room with two beds. |
Connecting Rooms | Rooms with individual entrance doors from the outside and a connecting door between. Guests can move between rooms without going through the hallway. |
Suite | A much larger accommodation than a normal hotel room. It usually has an attached bathroom, a living area, and most times, includes a dining area as well. |
Rate | The cost of renting a room for a certain time period. |
Upfront | If the hotel staff ask you to pay this way, they’re asking you to pay in advance. |
Deposit | Amount paid ahead of time to secure a reservation. |
Luggage | Suitcases or other bags in which to pack personal belongings for travelling. |

Money Belt | A belt with a pouch for carrying money. (*Pouch: a small flexible bag, typically carried in a pocket or attached to a belt.) |
Lobby | A large area near the reception desk at the front of the hotel. |
Reception | The place where visitors or guests are received. |
Check in | To register at a hotel, to announce or record one's arrival at a hotel. |
Check out | To settle one's hotel bill before leaving. |
Brochure | Small booklets that provide information on the local sites and attractions. |
Hallway | A long passage in a building with doors on both sides of it. |
Corridor | A long hallway, especially one that has rooms opening up into it. |
Stairs | A set of steps leading from one floor of a building to another, typically inside the building. |
Elevator | A compartment housed in a shaft for raising and lowering people or things to different floors in a building. |
Lift | A compartment housed in a shaft for raising and lowering people or things to different floors in a building. |
Floor | A part of a building comprising all the rooms that are on the same level; a storey (piso). |
Ground Floor | In British English, the floor of a building at street level. The floor above it is the first floor and the floor below is called the basement. |
First Floor | The floor above the ground floor in British English. But, in American English, this is the floor at street level. |
Bellboy | A male worker at a hotel who carries luggage for guests. |
Valet | A hotel employee who greets guests upon their arrival and provides customer service by parking and retrieving their vehicle. |
Parking Pass | A parking permit that authorizes a vehicle to be parked in a designated parking location. |
Hotel Manager | Someone who is in charge of managing a hotel. |
Maid | A female worker who cleans the rooms and changes the linen (bed sheets). |
Towels | A piece of cloth used for wiping, especially one used for drying anything wet, as a person after a bath. |
Pillow Case | The covering that goes over a pillow. |
Pillow | A rectangular cloth bag stuffed with feathers or other soft materials, used to support the head when lying or sleeping. |
Room Service | A hotel service enabling guests to choose menu items for delivery to their hotel room for consumption there, served by staff. |
Wake-up Call | A service provided by lodging establishments allowing guests to request a telephone call at a pre-specified time, thus causing the guest to wake up at that time. |
Late Charge | A fee for staying past the check-out time. |
Late Check-out | An arrangement which allows a guest to check out later than the normal time. |
Damage Charge | Money a guest owes for repairs to hotel property (when caused by violent or careless acts). |
Alarm Call | A service provided by lodging establishments allowing guests to request a telephone call at a pre-specified time, thus causing the guest to wake up at that time. |
