| domain-specific word | A word having to do with a specific field of activity or study |
| academic word | A word used in educational settings more than in conversation; often a more precise word in place of a more common word |
| context clue | A word or phrase in a text that helps define another word in the text |
| exposition | The beginning of a narrative wherein the setting |
| complicating incident | An important early event that signals the start of the action of a story and introduces the conflict |
| rising action | A series of events that builds interest or suspense in a narrative |
| climax | The point of highest action in a story; the turning point |
| falling action | The conclusion of a story |
| resolution | The solution or working out of a literary conflict |
| first-person point of view | narration of the story by one of the characters |
| limited narrator | a narrator outside a story (third person) who knows the thoughts and feelings of only a single character |
| omniscient narrator | a narrator outside a story (third person) who knows everything about the characters and events in a story |
| third-person point of view | narration of a story by an outside observer of the action |
| reliable narrator | a narrator who can be depended on to tell the truth as far as they know it |
| unreliable narrator | a narrator who is not dependable or trustworthy; the narrator may be dishonest |
| narrative nonfiction | a narrative based on factual material told using the same literary devices and techniques as fictional stories |
| foreshadowing | a technique authors use to give clues about or to suggest what is going to happen |
| subplot | a story line or plot that is secondary to the main plot |
| anecdote | a brief account of an incident that offers an example to make a point |
| flashback | a narrative technique that allows authors to introduce past events that have a direct effect on current events |
| transition | a word or phrase that connects ideas |
