| Sequence | the order in which events happen |
| Transitions | words or phrases that connect ideas, details, or events in writing |
| Conflict | a struggle between opposing forces |
| External conflict | a character struggles with an outside force, such as another character or something in nature |
| Internal conflict | the character struggles with his or her own needs, desires, or emotions |
| Connotation | the suggested or implied meaning or emotion associated with a word-beyond its literal (dictionary) definition |
| Denotation | the exact, literal (dictionary) meaning of a word |
| Foreshadowing | clues or hints signaling events that will occur later in the plot |
