English Deffinitions
Semester one Honors 11 English Deffinitions!
| Word | Definition |

| Speaker | the imaginary voice, or persona, poem. |
| Point of View | The vantage point from which a writer tells a story |
| First Person | The narrator is a character in the story. Uses the pronoun "I" |
| Limited Third Person | Narrator is outside the story, tells the story from the vartage point of only one character. |
| Monologue | A long, formal speech made by a character in a play |
| Aside | Private words that a character in a play speaks to the audience or to another character and that aren't supposed to be overheard by others onstage. |
| Couplets | The consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme. (2 lines) |
| Dialogue | A conversation b/w two or more people |
| Blank Verse | Poetry written in unrhymed iambic pentameter (upper class educated) |
| Iamb | A metrical font, or unit of measure, consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. |
| Prose | Regular dialogue(not poetic form), lower class; uneducated |
| Paradox | An apparent contradiction that on closer examination is actually true. |
| Tragedy | A literary work depicting serious events in which the main character, who is often high-ranking and dignified, comes to an unhappy end. I.E- Macbeth |
| Motiff | Recurring idea/event. I.E.- Blood in Macbeth, or Contradiction of Willie's Words of advice to his sons in Death of a Salesman |
| Chiasmus | Reversal of grammatical structures |
