Introduction to Algebra
Term | Definition |

variable | a letter or symbol that represents a quantity that can change. |
constant | a quantity that does not change |
algebraic expression | an expression that contains one or more variables and may contain operation symbols |
evaluate | substitute a number for the variable and then find the value by simplifying |
equation | a mathematical statement with two equal quantities |
inverse operations | operations that undo each other |
order of operations | a rule for evaluating expressions: first perform the operations in parentheses, then find the values of numbers with exponents, then multiply or divide from left to right, and then add or subtract from left to right |
commutative property | the order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or the product |
associative property | when adding or multiplying, the way in which the numbers are grouped does not affect the sum or product |
solution | a value for a variable that makes an equation true |
