Why was Joey purchased? For a plow horse to till the fields
What difficulty does Joey's owner have? Albert's father needs to pay rent/bills from the year's crops, but Joey isn't a plow horse.
What happens to the horse when the war begins? Joey is sold to the cavalry because the crops were spoiled from the rain.
What were the horses used for in the first battle? They performed a cavalry charge against the Germans.
How did the machine guns benefit the Germans? It made it easier for them to immobilize a horse and rider, and frighten the horses.
What was the mistake the British captain made during the first battle of WWI? Charging through where the Germans were set up with the machine guns
How do the Germans use the horses during the war effort? They carried high-ranking officials, hauled the tanks and shellers up the hill in large groups.
What happens to the soldiers (two brothers), who left the German army? They were executed by a firing squad for desertion.
Why are the Germans taking everything from the farm? They needed food for the soldiers on the front lines.
How did the trenches help the soldiers? They provided a place to sleep, and helped to cover them from raids and attacks.
Besides hauling artillery, what else do you think horses, donkeys and mules were used for? They carried food, water, ammunition, and medical supplies
Dogs and pigeons were also used in WWI. How do you think they were used? To carry messages
What do you think canaries were used for? To detect poisonous gases
Cats and dogs were also trained to do what in the trenches? Hunt rats
Due to the lack of horses, what other animal was taken from zoos and circuses and put to work? Elephants
How does the war affect those who are not soldiers? They suffered from psychological trauma and stress, separation from loved ones, collateral damage, nightmares, and were innocent victims of combat. Many became refugees until their country was rebuilt.
