Microbial Growth

QuestionAnswer
when bacteria dan replicates it replicates the chromosome in opposite directions until the terminus us reached
microbes are this type of repoductive organism asexual
how do they have genetiv recombination horizontal gene transfer
their chromosomes are single circular chromosomes
most common for of bacteral reproductions is binary fission
four steps of binary fission growth of cell size, replicate DNA, cell division, daughter cell seperate
cytokenisis is directed by FtsZ protein
ftsz protien divides cell by creating a z ring to form divisiome, divisiome activates cell wall of peptidoglycan and septum
cell wall is made of peptidoglycan and septum
the z ring is anchored by binding protiens
during cell division, enzymes break monomers of cell walls and allow addition of new subunits
the amount of time bacteria takes to reproduce is referred to as generation time, or double time
generation time, or double time is the amount of time it takes the population to double in size
eukaryotes, human cells take 25 years for generation time
e.coli takes this amount of time to reproduce 20 mins
leoprsy takes this many days to double 14 days
tuberculosis takes ____ to double 15-20 hrs.
the formula to predict any population is Nn=N02n
culture density the number of cells divided by unit volume
closed cultures have finite resources
growth curve in closed cultures lag phase, log phase, stationary phase, and death phase
lag phase inoculum cells added and adjust to culture medium, no change in population
log phase binary fission occures, cell replication is greater than cell death
stationary phase resources become depleted cell replication equals cell death
death phase endospores can form cell replication is less than cell death

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
