Reconstruction Era

TermDefinition
Compromise of 1877 unwritten deal arranged among Congress that settled the1876 presidential election. It resulted in the United States federal government pulling the last troops out of the South, and ending the Reconstruction Era.
Plessy Vs. Ferguson Supreme Court case that allowed for segregation laws "(separate but equal")
Ku Klux Klan Racist white supremacist terrorist organization that first arose in the South after the end of the Civil War. Opposed the dismantling of slavery and sought to keep African Americans in a permanent state of subjugation to whites.
Reconstruction Amendments 13th- Ended slavery in the United States 14th- defined citizenship, guaranteed due process and equal protection for all citizens, including African-Americans. 15th- Gives African-Americans the right to vote (applied to men only)
Reconstruction clashes Andrew Johnson wants to allow the South back into the Union and allow them to determine former slave rights Radical Republicans fight for the rights of former slaves
Black Codes Restrictive laws designed to limit the freedom of African Americans and ensure their availability as a cheap labor force after slavery was abolished during the Civil War.
Other forms of African-American oppression Grandfather clauses - said that a man could only vote if his ancestor had been a voter before 1867—but the ancestors of most African-Americans citizens had been enslaved and constitutionally ineligible to vote. Poll Taxes- tax/fee in voting booths
Freedmen's Bureau Reconstruction agency that provided food, shelter, water, aid, education, and job training to newly freed slaves and their families.
