Paragraph 1. (A) Martin Luther was a German man who was born in 1483 and was born into a wealthy lifestyle. He studied law and was a professor at the University of Wettenberg but wanted to become an Augustinian monk.
Para 1. (B) He also studied the bible and gathered the idea that only faith in God could get a person into heaven and called this “Justification by faith alone”.
Para 2. (A) The sale of indulgences was introduced in 1517 in Wittenberg by John Tatzel. He told people that if they bought an indulgence from him that they were guaranteed a place in heaven. As you can imagine Luther was furious because this went against his belief.
Para 2. (B) So Luther decided to write an Archbishop as a sign of protest but it got ignored. But he didn’t stop there so he wrote the ninety-five theses (arguments) that were in Latin.
Para 2. (C) He is said to have then nailed them to the door of the Wettenberg church where the indulgence was being sold, however many don’t believe this to be true. These were quickly translated into German thanks to the printing press.
Para 2. (D) So it got turned into a full-scale public attack on the authority of the Pope.
Para 3. (A) By 1519 the thesis had spread a lot. At first Pope Leo X did not consider Luther to be a threat but later he sent a Papal bull to Luther threatening excommunication.
Para 3. (B) Luther burned the letter in public and was excommunicated in 1521. He then continued to protest and wrote pamphlets and gave sermons rejecting the power of the Pope.
Para 3. (C) Charles V (the ruler of Germany) called a meeting known as the Diet of Worms about Luther. Luther went and was able to discuss his beliefs but he refused to change his beliefs.
Para 4. (A) Charles V then issued the Edict of Worms, which made Luther become an outlaw. So Luther was to be arrested and punished for heresy. But Prince Frederick of Saxony arranged a fake kidnapping...
Para 4 (b) and hid Luther for a year because he supported Luther. Luther then translated the bible in Germany so everyone could read it for themselves, he also formed a new Christian religion while he was there.
Para 5. (A) Luther went on to marry an ex-nun named Catherine von Bora and had 6 children. He still wrote and protested until he died in 1546 and his beliefs spread very quickly he gained supportrs wich meant tha there were huge consequences coming for Germny & Europ
Para 5. (B) The reformation spread throughout Europe and eventually the Catholic Church was made to address many problemas that Luther brought awareness to. They brought in reformers and this was called the counter reformation.
