| lyric poetry | convey an exact mood or reeling to the reader....poet speaks directly to the reader and asks for the reader's sympathy |
| ballads | part of the oral tradition...tells a story in a song |
| narrative poem | tells stories in verse and can be short or long |
| sonnet | a poem that traditionally has fourteen lines and is written in iambic pentameter |
| tradgies | are more serious and often sad |
| comedies | show the humor of the world and are usually funny |
| melodrama | a subgenre of drama that deals with serious issues but stops short of being tragic in the end |
| musical | a type of drama that includes singing and dancing |
| fable | a brief story that teaches a moral lesson |
| mood | the "atmosphere" or a text or the way it makes you feel when you read it |
| simile | a comparison using "like" or "as" |
| suffix | an added ending which alters the meaning of a word |
| imagery | vivid descriptions which appeal to the five senses and make the reader feel present |
| genre | a category or type of literature |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration used for effect |
| plot | the series of events which make up a story |
| 1st person | a perspective identified by the use of words like "I" or "me" |
| theme | the lesson the author would like the reader to learn |
| chronological | a type of text structure which includes dates or times |
| personification | a technique by which non living things are given human traits or abilities |
| synonym | a word that has a similar meaning to another word |
| context clues | details surrounding an unfamiliar word which can help in determining its meaning |
| protagonist | the main character of a story |
| thesis statement | a statement in a persuasive paper which states a claim and outlines what will be covered |
| forshadowing | hints about future developments in a work of literature |
| metaphor | a comparison between two generally unrelated things which does not contain "like" or as" |
| symbol | when a person or object is used to represent more significant abstract idea |
| setting | the time and place in which a story occurs |
| tone | the author or narrator's outlook at a particular time during a story (sarcastic, angry, etc.) |
| fiction | literature which is not based on real life events |
| stanza | the "paragraphs" that make up a poem |
| conflict | obstacles or problems encountered by characters in a story |
| moral | a special name given to the theme of a fable |
| onomatopoeia | a word which sounds like the sound it is meant to represent |
