| Term | Definition |

| Acid | a chemical substance, usually a liquid, which contains hydrogen and can react with other substances to form salts. Some acids burn or dissolve other substances that they come into contact with. |
| Hydrogen | a gas that is the lightest of all the elements. It combines with oxygen to form water. |
| Base | a chemical substance, for example an alkali , that can combine with an acid to form a salt |
| Alkali | a chemical substance that reacts with acids to form a salt and gives a solution with a pH of more than seven when it is dissolved in water |
| Solution | a liquid in which a solid substance has been dissolved. |
| Substance | a solid, powder, liquid, or gas with particular properties. |
| Properties | the ways in which a substance or object behaves in particular conditions. |
| Matter | physical substance in general that everything in the world consists of; not mind or spirit |
| PH | Pondus Hydrogenii, a measurement of the level of acid or alkali in a solution or substance. In the pH range of 0 to 14 a reading of below 7 shows an acid and of above 7 shows an alkali |
| Indicator | a measurement or value that gives you an idea of what something is like. |
| ion | an atom or a molecule with a positive or negative electric charge caused by its losing or gaining one or more electrons |
| electron | a very small piece of matter (= a substance) with a negative electric charge, found in all atoms |
| sodium chloride | common salt (a chemical made up of sodium and chlorine ) |
| particles | any of the basic units of matter and energy, such as an electron or atom , a proton, molecule or photon |
