Bridge to Chemistry

Vocabulary used in our "Bridge to Chemistry" lessons

TermDefinition
Atom The building block of matter. The smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element.
Element A pure substance that cannot be seperated or broken down into simpler substances. All atoms have the same atomic number.
Molecule A neutral group of atoms that are held together by covalent bonds.
Compound A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.
Proton Positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom. # of these makes up the atomic # for each element.
Neutron Particle found in the nucleus of an atom with about the same mass as a proton, but without an electric charge.
Electron Negatively charged subatomic particle.
Nucleus (of an atom) Small dense region of an atom containing protons and neutrons.
Valence Electron An electron that is found in the outermost shell of an atom. This determines that atom's chemical properties.
Periodic Table An arrangement of the elements in order of their atomic numbers such that elements with the same properties fall in the same column or group.
Chemical Reaction The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances.
Chemical Reactivity How readily a substance undergoes a chemical reaction.
Reactants A substance or molecule that participates (goes into) a chemical reaction.
Products A substance that forms (comes out of) a chemical reaction.
Physcial Property A characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness.
Chemical Property A property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in a chemical reaction.
Balanced Chemical Equation When the number of atoms invloved on the reactant side of an equation is equal to the number of atoms on the product side.
Metal An element that is shiny and that conducts heat and electricity well.
Non-Metal An element that conducts heat and electricity poorly and that does not form positive ions in an electrolytic solution.
Metalloid An element that has properties of BOTH metals and non-metals; sometimes referred to as a semiconductor.
Noble Gas One of the elements found in Group 18 of the periodic table.
Atomic Mass Quanitity of matter found in an element. = total # of protons and neutrons in the atom.
Atomic Number The number of protons in an atom's nucleus.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
