Sound

QuestionAnswer
Diffraction The bending of waves around an obstacle.
Refraction The change in direction of a wave passing from one medium to another caused by a change in speed.
Standing Wave A wave that does not appear to be moving.
Reflection The bouncing back of a wave from a boundary that does not absorb all of its energy.
Constructive interference When the crest of one wave meets the crest of another wave.
Destructive interference When the crest of one wave meets the trough of another wave.
Principle of superposition Method of adding crests and troughs of interfering waves together to describe a new wave.
Beats Sounds produced by the interference of sound waves that are used to tune piano strings.
Interference The combination of two or more waves that result in a single wave.
Nodes Points in a standing wave that have no vibration due to destructive interference.
Sound Produced when matter vibrates.
Pitch Depends on the frequency of a wave.
Infrasonic The sound that is below the range of human hearing.
Ultrasonic The sound that is above range of human hearing.
Doppler A change in frequency/pitch of a sound wave.
Acoustics The science of sound.
