Practice Figurative Language

TermDefinition
Alliteration Repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of words. "Betsy bought bigger bottoms for baby Billy."
Onomatopoeia Words whose sound suggests its meaning. "Click the button to take the picture."
Metaphor The comparison of 2 different objects or animals w/o using like or as. "The strawberry was a fresh summer day."
Simile A comparison using “like” or “as.” "The student was as quiet as a mouse.
Hyperbole An exaggeration to create an affect. The walk was a million miles long!
Personification Giving human qualities to objects and animals. "The tree leaves danced in the wind."
Idiom A phrase that has a meaning different from the dictionary definition. "The test was a piece of cake!"
