Rational Numbers Numbers that can be written as Fractions
Fractions Used to describe parts of a whole
Numerator Top number of the fraction. Shows how many parts are required
Denominator Bottom number of the fraction Shows the number of parts into which the whole can be divided.
Proper Fraction Has a numerator that is smaller than the denominator Eg 2/3
Improper Fraction Has a numerator larger than the denominator Eg 5/4
Mixed Number Is made up of a whole number and a fraction Eg 1 3/5
Equivalent Fraction Equivalent Fractions are equal Eg 1/2 5/10 10/20 8/19 can all be simplified to a 1/2

< Less than
Ascending Order Numbers in order from smallest to largest
HCF Highest Common Factor
LCM Lowest Common Multiple
Simplify Reducing the fraction to its lowest equivalent form
How to simplify Divide the fraction by the Highest Common Factor of the numerator and the denominator
Cancelling Down Dividing the numerator & denominator by the same number.
Adding & Subtracting fractions Must have the same denominator. Then only the numerator is either added or subtracted. The denominator stays the same. Simplify the answer by cancelling down where possible
