QuestionAnswer
Reference Point a point against which position is measured (this allows you to determine whether or not the position changes)
Vector quantity a physical measurement that contains directional information
Scalar quantity a physical measurement that does not contain directional information
Acceleration the time rate of change of an object's velocity
Free fall the motion of an object when it is falling solely under the influence of gravity
If an object's position does not change relative to a reference point, is it in motion relative to that reference point? Explain In order for motion to occur, an object's position must change. Since this object's position is not changing, it is not moving relative to the reference point
A glass of water sits on the counter. Is it in motion? Why or why not? The glass of water is moving relative to many reference points. To someone standing still, the glass is not moving. Relative to any object not on earth, it is in motion
Understand the relativity of motion. If you are standing still next to a tree and a jogger passes by - who is in motion relative to you and who is still? The jogger would be in motion relative to you but the tree would be still. If you were jogging next to the jogger than the jogger would be still and the tree would be in motion!
Be able to translate minutes to hours. What is 25 minutes translated to hours in decimal form? 25 min/ 1 X 1 hour / 60 minutes = 25/60 hours = .43 hours
What is the formula for speed? speed = distance traveled / time traveled
How do you translate kilometers to meters? (which is bigger? Remember kilo means 1,000 so it is 1,000 times bigger than a meter) 1 km / 1 X 1,000 meter / 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters (so 1 km = 1,000 meters)
Velocity is the same as speed but it also gives direction. ***Remember to give direction when asked for velocity. Relative velocity is comparing to speed's relative to each other. How do you calculate relative velocity? When objects travel in the same direction, their relative speed is the difference between their individual speeds. When they traveling opposite directions, their relative speed is the sum of their individual speeds
2 cars are traveling down a road. The first car is traveling north at 55 mph, and the second is a few hundred yards behind, traveling north at 45 mph. What is their relative velocity? (***remember to include direction when asking for velocity) relative speed = 55 mph - 45 mph = 10 mph away from each other (take the difference because they are traveling the same direction)
2 cars are traveling down a road. The first car is traveling north at 55 mph, and the second is a few hundred yards south, traveling south at 45 mph. What is their relative velocity? relative speed = 55 mph + 45 mph = 100 mph away from each other (take the sum because they are traveling in opposite directions)
be able to identify how to write speed, distance, velocity, or acceleration. speed = distance / time (ex. 5 miles per hour); distance = inches, feet, miles, meters etc; velocity would be a speed plus direction; acceleration would look like velocity but the time would be squared.
What is the formula for acceleration? acceleration = final velocity - initial velocity / time (*** remember answer would be shown with time squared)
ALL objects accelerate equally under the influence of gravity - know what the acceleration is (due to gravity) 9.8 meters/second squared OR 32 feet/second squared
on earth, what alters free fall? air resistance
Does air resistance equally effect everything? No, it has very little effect on a heavy object compared to a light object so we can say a big rock is considered to have free fall because the resistance is so little
What is the formula for distance? distance = 1/2 X (acceleration) X (time)squared
