Exploring Space

QuestionAnswer
What do scientists use to measure the physical size of a star? Scientists use solar radius to measure the physical size of a star
What is a black hole? An object so dense that its gravity prevents even light from escaping.
What is the difference between weight and mass? The weight of an object depends on the strength of gravitational force while mass is the amount of matter an object contains.
What unit do scientists use to measure the physical size of a star? Scientists use solar radius to measure the physical size of a star.
Why do stars shine? Stars shine due to nuclear reactions in their core that create huge amounts of energy released as heat, light and other types of radiation.
What does the color of a star indicate? The color of a star indicates its temperature.
What is the apparent magnitude of a star? The apparent magnitude of a star refers to a star's brightness, as seen from Earth.
What is the absolute brightness of a star? The absolute brightness of star refers to a measure of a star's brightness at a known distance from Earth.
How is energy transferred from the hot center of the sun to it's surface? Energy is transferred via radiation(radiative zone) and convection (convection zone).
Explain the structure of the sun's atmosphere. The sun's atmosphere is composed of the photosphere where solar flares and prominences occur, the chromosphere & the corona where solar winds orginate.
Explain the Structure of the sun's interior. The sun's interior is composed of the core where nuclear fusion occurs, the radiative zone where energy from the core is transferred by electromagnetic radiation & the convection zone where heated plasma rises to the surface
Define universe. The universe consists of all of space and all of the matter and energy that space contains.
Describe each type of galaxy: elliptical, spiral and irregular. Irregular: young, with no defined shape, Spiral: huge bulge in the middle with arms that spiral outward like a pinwheel, Elliptical: older, no longer forming stars.
Where is Earth's center of gravity and its relationship to objects on Earth? Earth's center of gravity is the center of the Earth and gravity pulls objects downward toward the center of gravity.
Explain the gravitational attraction between objects. The gravitational force between two objects corresponds to their masses, therefore force increases with more mass and decreases with less.
Define solar flare. Solar flares are bright spots that occur in the photosphere that last for several minutes that heat the solar atmosphere.
Define a prominence. Prominences are huge loops of cooler gas that occur in the photosphere, they can last anywhere from a day to several months.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
