Figurative Language and Sound Devices

this is an example of a metaphor I don't trust that kid; he's a sly fox.

this is an example of a hyperbole this day is lasting forever!
this is an example of personification Rita heard the last piece of pie calling her name.
simile when an author compares similarities in two things, using the words "like" or "as"
metaphor A strong, absolute comparison. Example: Bobby Jo is a chicken.
hyperbole An over exaggeration or distortion of facts made to prove a point. Example: It's a million degrees outside!
personification Giving human-like qualities to inanimate (nonliving) things.
literal language these are words that follow a dictionary definition
figurative language these are words that go BEYOND the literal meaning and are more creative
