| evaluate | to find the value of an expression |
| expression | a group of one or more numbers, unknowns, and/or operation symbols that represents a quantity example: 3 x 4 |
| ordered pair | a pair of numbers, (x,y), that describes the location of a point in the coordinate plane, where the x-coordinate gives the point’s horizontal distance from the origin and the y-coordinate gives the point’s vertical distance from the origin |
| origin | the point (0,0) on the coordinate plane where the x-axis and y-axis intersect |
| x-axis | the horizontal number line in a coordinate plane |
| y-axis | the vertical number line in a coordinate plane |
| regular polygon | a polygon with all sides of equal length and all angles equal measures |
| area | the amount of space inside a closed two-dimensional figure; area is measured in square units |
| equation | a mathematical statement that uses an equal sign (=) to show that two expressions have the same value |
| mixed number | a number with a whole number part and a fractional part |
| multiples | any given number times every other number |
| sum | the answer in an addition problem |
| product | the answer in a multiplication problem |
| quotient | the answer in a division problem |
| difference | the answer in a subtraction problem |
| common denominator | a number that is a common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions |
| exponent | the number in a power that tells how many times to use the base as a factor in repeated multiplication |
| equivalent fractions | two or more different fractions that name the same part of a whole or the same point on a number line |
| base (of a power) | in a power, the number that is used as a repeated factor |
| base ten | a ten-digit number system in which the value of a digit depends on its place; the value of each place is 10 times the value of the place to the right and 1/10 of the value of the place to the left |
