| Simplify | Putting like terms together |
| Like terms | Terms with the same letter(s) raised to the same power. Example: 3x and 2x OR 4abc and 9abc. |
| Unlike terms | Terms with different letter(s) raised to different powers. Example: 4x and 10y OR 9xy and 5pc. |
| Term | Can be a number, a variable or a variable with a number attached to it. Examples: 4, x, 5x, 6y, 3a, 2b, 1y. |
| Expression | A list of terms separated by mathematical operations. Example: 4a + 2x + 3z. |
| Variable | A letter whose value can change. Examples: x, y, z ,a |
| Coefficient | Is the number attached to a letter in a term. Example: In 5x, 5 is the coefficient. |
| Constant | A number that does not change Example 4, -2 |
