Like & Unlike terms

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Simplify Putting like terms together
Like terms Terms with the same letter(s) raised to the same power. Example: 3x and 2x OR 4abc and 9abc.
Unlike terms Terms with different letter(s) raised to different powers. Example: 4x and 10y OR 9xy and 5pc.
Term Can be a number, a variable or a variable with a number attached to it. Examples: 4, x, 5x, 6y, 3a, 2b, 1y.
Expression A list of terms separated by mathematical operations. Example: 4a + 2x + 3z.
Variable A letter whose value can change. Examples: x, y, z ,a
Coefficient Is the number attached to a letter in a term. Example: In 5x, 5 is the coefficient.
Constant A number that does not change Example 4, -2
