| social class/hierarchy | a system of ranking people based on different factors or characteristics, like socioeconomic status, religion, or cultural similarities |
| social mobility | the ability to move between groups in a social hierarchy; in most ancient civilizations, people were not allowed to progress or move to another class |
| caste system | societies that are ranked based on hereditary (family) groups not only in India and southern parts of Asia, but throughout the world |

| upper class | In ancient civilizations, this group usually included rulers, nobles, and priests. |
| lower class | In ancient civilizations, this group usually included merchants, artisans, and peasants. |
