China Key Terms for Lesson 2

TermDefinition
Confucianism a system of beliefs based on the teachings of Confucius
Daoism a Chinese philosophy concerned living free of worldly things and in harmony with nature
legalism a Chinese philosophy that stressed the importance of harsh laws and strict punishments to keep order in society
filial piety the responsibility children have to respect, obey, and care for their parents these ideas were central to the teachings of Confucius
censor an official who watches others for correct behavior
currenccy something, such as coins or paper money, that is used as a medium of exchange
tenant farmer a farmer who works land owned by someone else and pays rent in cash or as a share of the crop
civil service government workers who were chosen on the basis of competitive tests
acupuncture a Chinese practice of inserting fine needles throught the skin at specific points to treat disease or relieve pain
