| warlord | a military leader who has his own army; helped the shang kings control territories |
| aristocrat | member of an upper class of society, usually made up of warlords and other royal officials |
| ancestors | a person that someone is descended from, long-dead family members. Oracle bones provided answers from ancestors |
| pictograph | a symbol in a writing system based on pictures that represent objects |
| ideographs | a symbol in a writing system that links 2 or more pictographs to express a thing or an idea |
| bureaucracy | a group of non-elected government officials; king led the government |
| heredity | having title or possession by reason of birth |
| Mandate of Heaven | the belief that the Chinese king's right to rule came from the gods |
| Dao | Chinese system of beliefs which describes the way a king must rule; means "path" and is often translated a "the Way." |
