Physics Vocabulary

8th Grade Science Unit 2

TermDefinition
Acceleration The change in an object’s speed or direction (velocity) over time.
Balanced Force When all forces acting on an object are equal and opposite.
Constant velocity When the velocity of an object does not change. The graph is a straight line.
distance The total length traveled.
Force A push or pull.
Friction The force that resists the motion of two surfaces that are touching.
Gravity The force of attraction between two objects.
Inertia An object’s tendency to resist changing its motion.
Kinetic Energy The energy of motion.
Law of Action-Reaction For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Law of Force & Acceleration F=ma. There is a relationship between force, mass, & acceleration. If you increase the acceleration, then the force increases.
Law of Inertia An object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion will remain in motion, unless acted upon by an unbalanced or outside force.
mass The amount of matter in an object.
Motion A change in position.
Net Force The total amount of force acting on an object.
Newton The SI unit of force. Measured with a spring scale.
Potential Energy Stored energy due to gravity, elastic, or chemicals. Also called positional energy.
Speed The distance traveled by an object in an amount of time.
Unbalanced Force When all forces acting on an object are not equal or not opposite.
Velocity Speed with a direction. Velocity has a unit of m/sec and a direction.
Work Force needed to move an object a distance (when both the force and the motion of the object are in the same direction).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
