Arctic fox

Short article (expository text) about the Arctic fox

TermDefinition
canid noun. Any of a family (Canidae) of carnivorous (meat eating) animals that includes wolves, jackals, foxes, coyotes, and the domestic dog.
bushy adjective. Full; something that looks like a bush, a bunch of short trees.
coat noun. The skin of an animal especially with its fur or wool; pelt.
camouflage noun. A disguise that allows an animal or a person to hide and not be recognized.
prey noun. An animal taken by a predator as food.
predator noun. An organism that primarily obtains food by killing and consuming other organisms.
muzzle noun. The projecting part of the face, including the nose and mouth, of an animal.
battle verb. To fight; this verb can be used figuratively such as When evening comes, I have to battle the urge to eat cookies before bedtime.
scavengers noun. Organisms that consume (eat) the bodies of animals they did not kill.
sense noun. A faculty (ability) by which the body perceives an external stimulus; sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch are the 5 senses.
keen* adjective. Refers to a sharp, very well developed sense, i.e., the owl has a keen sense of sight.
circumpolar adjective. Any location, place, situated around or inhabiting one of the earth's poles. Circum (around) + polar (pole)
detect verb: To find, to locate
range noun: An area between upper and lower limits. In mathematics, a range is the difference between the lowest and the highest value ex. 9 - 3 the range is 6
mobile adjective: The ability to move freely and easily.
Arctic noun: the regions around the North Pole.
hare noun: a fast-running, long-eared mammal that looks like a rabbit.
Inuktitut noun: The Inuit language spoken in the central and eastern Canadian arctic.
nurse verb: to feed a baby at the breast.
pups noun: the offspring (babies) of the canid family; whelps.
whelps noun: the offspring (babies) of the canid family; pups.
den noun: location where wild animals live; their home.
litter noun: The group of young animals born to an animal at one time.
endure verb: To live through, experience, stay alive.
metabolism noun: The chemical reactions in the body's cells that change food into energy.
