Figurative Language

Simile Uses like or as
Metaphor a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable
Assonance repeating a vowel sound in a phrase or sentence
Hyperbole A figure of speech that mimics the sound of the object or action it refers to
Onomatopoeia A word that mimics the sound of the object or action refers to.
Alliteration The repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of each or most of the words in a sentence.
Personification Nonhuman things taking on human characteristics.
Idiom A word or phrase that shows that means something different from it's literal meaning
Synecdoche a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa
Metonymy the substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct for that of the thing meant
