| Metaphor | a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable |
| Assonance | repeating a vowel sound in a phrase or sentence |
| Hyperbole | A figure of speech that mimics the sound of the object or action it refers to |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that mimics the sound of the object or action refers to. |
| Alliteration | The repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of each or most of the words in a sentence. |
| Personification | Nonhuman things taking on human characteristics. |
| Idiom | A word or phrase that shows that means something different from it's literal meaning |
| Synecdoche | a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa |
| Metonymy | the substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct for that of the thing meant |
