Literary Genres
| Term | Definition |

| Poetry | Uses carefully chosen language as well as figures of speech (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification), and poetic devices (alliteration, end rhyme, onomatopoeia, repetition), to create a mood or feeling. |
| Fiction | Includes any writing that an author makes up from his or hers imagination. |
| Fantasy | Usually tells about magic, superstition, and incredible worlds that could not exist in real life. Also, everyday people or animals in unbelievable situations. Within the characters there may be wizards, dragons, gargoyles, or knights. |
| Science Fiction | Uses science or technology to create an extraordinary but believable story. Science stories often take place in the future. |
| Mystery | Is a story based on a strange crime, such as a missing object, or the death of a person, or a suspicious disappearance. Clues are used to solve a mystery, the process which often involves suspense. |
| Biography | Is an account of a person's life written by someone else. The writer interviews the subject, as well as his family, friends, and associates, and then the writer writes about the subject, the subject's life, and accomplishments. |
| Drama | Consists of plays or skits that are meant to be performed on a stage in front of an audience. |
| Nonfiction | Consists of plays or skits that are meant to be performed on a stage in front of an audience. |
| Historical fiction | A made up story that takes place during an actual time in history; setting can be real but the characters are made-up |
| Realistic fiction | a story set in the present and involving events that could actually happen |
