What is the Great Rift Valley? first humans appeared in this area, a deep gash in Earth's crust that runs through the floor of the Red Sea and across eastern Africa.
What was griots? West Africa, these storytellers kept the history and literature of a culture. Shared orally the history and literature of a culture?
How were history and culture preserved in African societies? Much of it was done by oral history passed on from one generation to another. Also through artwork.
What are four general vegetation types found in Africa? grassland, forest, desert, savanna
What is the main source of information about early African cultures? Most of the information came from the stories griots told.
Why did diverse cultures develop in Africa? Because of trade, different beliefs and other advances in every civilization.
How did agriculture change the way Africans lived? Allowed them to settle down and made population bigger. Also allowed them to have more free time and have kids.
What evidence shows that Djenné-Djeno was a major trading city in West Africa? It was located on a river -many materialistic artifacts were discovered there.
What is extended family? It is a whole family.
Djenné-Djeno is? City of Niger River delta that has been inhabited since about 250 BC.
What is lineage? The people who are descended from a common ancestor.
Animism is? The belief that spirits are present in animals, plants, and other natural objects.
Patrilineal is. Relating to a social system in which family descent and inheritance rights are traced through the father.
Stateless Society is? Cultural groups in which authority is shared by lineages of equal power instead of being exercised by a central government.
What is a Nok? An African people who lived in what is now Nigeria between 500 BC and AD 200.
