Pro Tools 101 Test

A guide to pro tools 1010 certification Test

QuestionAnswer
Name and describe 5 fives of production tasks Pro Tools can be used for? 1. Audio Processing (edits and enhances audio) 2. Midi Production 3. Notation and Scores ( provides a better workflow for composers, songwriters, etc. Allows them to work with sheet music 4. Mixing and Automation 5. Audio for Video & Post Production
What is the frequency range of the human hearing? Between 20 and 20,000 cycles per second ( 20hz - 20Khz)
What does the amplitude of a sound wave affect in terms of how we perceive sound? the loudness
How is frequency measured? in cycles per second, commonly known as Hertz (Hz)
What is the name of the law that specifies the relationship between sample rate and audio frequency? The Nyquist Theorem
how is sound measured? in Decibels (dB)
How does the sample rate of a system relate to the frequency of audio it can capture? The sample rate needs to be twice that of the highest frequency to be sampled.
How does the bit depth of a system relate to the dynamic range of audio it can capture? The larger the bit depth the higher the dynamic range.
How can you estimate the dynamic range of a system? 6 dB per bit (Size x 6) The dynamic range increases by about 6 dB for each bit added to the binary word length.
What are some common digital connections available on Pro Tools audio interfaces? What type of connector does each use? S/PDIF (uses RCA [coaxial jacks]: Sony/Philips Digital Interface AES/EBU (uses XLR): Audio Engineering Society/ European Broadcast Union
Name some audio interfaces that are compatible with the STANDARD Pro Tools Software Any interface that includes a supported core Audio (MAC) or ASIO (Window) driver.
Name some Avid audio interfaces that are compatible with Pro Tools ULTIMATE software - Pro Tools HD OMNI, HD I/O, HD MADI, Pro Tools MTRX & MTRX Studio
How is amplitude measured? Decibels (dB)
What does the frequency of a sound wave affect in terms of how we perceive the sound? The pitch
What is the The Nyquist Theorem? In order to produce an accurate representation of a given frequency, each cycle of the sound's vibration must be sampled a min. of 2 times
What are some of the folders and files the protools creates as part of the session hierarchy. .ptx file Wavecache.wfm file Audio Files Folder Bounce Files Folder Video Files Folder Clip Groups Folder Session File Backups Folder
Where is the session file located? The session file gets created in the session folder of the same name
What is the Wavecache.wfm file used for? What happens if the Wavecache file gets deleted or goes missing? It stores all of the waveform display data for any audio in the session and enables PT to open more quickly. Nothing, Pro Tools will recalculate the data next time it's opened but the session may take longer to open
Where are the audio files stored in the session hierarchy? In the Audio Files Folder for the session
Where are the Pro Tools MIDI files normally stored? In the .ptx session file
Which components should you turn on first when powering up a Pro Tools system? Which component should you turn on last? External storage devices and drives External MIDI interfaces MIDI controllers Audio interfaces if they are not bus powered Speakers should be turnt on last
What type of processing does the Hardware Buffer Size affect? What type of processing does it not affect? It affects host based tasks, such as AAX native plug-in processing during recording and live input monitoring. It does not affect DSP processing on hardware accelerated system (HDX cards)
What kind of commands can be found under the Pro Tools View menu? Hide/Show rulers Hide/Show track sends
How does the View menu differ from the Window menu? The View menu affects the display within a Pro Tools window. The Window menu allows to show or hide entire windows or arrange the windows on the screen.
Which Pro Tools window displays audio waveforms and can be used to work directly with audio, MIDI, and video files on tracks? Edit Window
Which Pro Tools window provides access to Pan controls and Volume Faders for each track? Mix Window
