Why did the US get involved in WWI? The Germans sank a ship with lots of American citizens on it and tried to get Mexico involved in exchange for states.
What was Alabama's BIGGEST contribution to the war effort? Sending troops including men as part of the Rainbow Division
About how many Alabamians fought in WWI? 100,000
What is Fort McClellan and Maxwell Field? What did they have to do with WWI? They are army bases in Anniston and Montgomery. Soldiers from all over the US were trained there.
How did everyday Alabamians contribute to the war effort? Knit clothes for soldiers, grow more cotton plants, grow victory gardens, go meatless for troops, bought war bonds
How did Birmingham contribute to the war effort? Factories that produced steel and iron products became really important, plus the mines to collect these items.
How did Mobile contribute to the war effort? It became a center for building ships!
How did Muscle Shoals contribute to the war effort? Wilson Dam was built there to power electricity for factories that made weapons and bullets.
How did Alabama change during WWI? Lots of people got jobs, especially in the cities. Many people moved out of farming jobs into jobs in the city. Women began to have more of a voice. Farmers learned to plant lots of different crops because of the boll weevil.
What's the Great Migration? When many African Americans moved out of the South.
Why did people begin to move out of the south? Blacks moved out of the south, looking for places around the country that treated them more fairly. Also, many moved to big cities for jobs.
