Kristallnacht German phrase that means “Night of Broken Glass”; the first violent offense on Jewish people carried out by the Nazis (Nov 9, 1938)
Hebrew language of jewish people, also the name of the ethnic group
gestapo german secret police
chancellor head of government, example is the senate
concentration camp pretty much a really bad prison
Hanukkah Jewish holiday
Star of David Jewish religious symbol
Ration (books) Used during WWII to limit the amount of food and other goods that families could buy; resources were otherwise used in the war or unable to attain due to limits on importation
Antisemitism being hostile against Jewish people
antisemitic a person who displays attributes of antisemitism
liberation A term used to describe Jewish prisoners being rescued/released from concentration camps; often means to bring about equal rights
Annex A small structure that is attached to a larger building; Anne Frank’s hideout is referred to as the “Secret Annex”
Nazi a member Adolf Hitler's party
Black Market Illegal selling or trading of rationed goods during WWII
Mazel Tov hebrew for good luck
Auschwitz Area in southern Poland which housed the largest concentration camp during WWII
Holocaust The death an entire group of people (genocide); 6 million Jewish people died during WWII (⅔ of Germany’s Jewish population)
