| figurative language | an imaginative use of words to express ideas that are not literally true |
| simile | a comparison of two unlike things using a word such as like, as, or than |
| metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things that have qualities in common , without using like or as |
| personification | the giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea |
| expository essay | a text that presents or explains information or ideas |
| pattern of organization | a particular arrangement of information and ideas |
| chronological order | the order in which actions or events occur |
| cause-and-effect order | the relationship between events and their causes |
| compare-and-contrast order | the similarities and differences of two or more subjects |
| spatial order | the arrangement of details according to their physical position or relationship |
| central idea | the most important idea in a text; not directly stated but implied |
