QuestionAnswer
What does the term elastic mean? The object will return to its original shape when the force is removed.
What does the term inelastic material mean? The object will keep their new shape when the force is removed.
What does malleable mean? The object can be hammered into shape.
How do you calculate the extension of a spring? New length- original length
What does directly proportional mean? If one quantity doubles so does the other.
What does non-linear relationship mean? The quantities do not produce a straight line graph.
Name a material that would produce a directly proportional force extension graph? Spring or wire at low forces.
Name a material that produces a non linear force extension graph. Rubber band.
If a spring extends 2 cm when 10 N are added , how much will extend when 30 N are added? 6cm
If a spring extends 5 cm when 5 N are added how much will it extend if 25 N are added? 25cm
What does the term elastic mean? When the force is removed it will return to its original shape.
What does the term inelastic mean? When the force is removed they keep their shape.
What does the term malleable mean? The material can be hammered into shape.
What is the relationship between the force applied to a spring and its extension? The force applied is directly proportional to the extension.
If a spring extends by 3cm when 10 N is applied, how much does it stretch when 30N are applied? Force has gone up by a factor of 3, so extension will go up by a factor of 3, so 9cm.
Describe the shape of a directly proportional graph? It is a straight line through the origin .
Give an example of an elastic material. spring
What is the equation in words that relates force to extension? Force =spring constant x extension
What is the equation in symbols that relates force to extension? F = k x X
What is the equation in words for the energy transferred to spring when it is stretched? Energy transferred = ½ x spring constant x (extension)2
What is the unit of the spring constant? Newtons per meter (N/m)
What is the unit of the spring extension? Metres (m)
When a spring is stretched and can then return to its original length it is known as __________ _______________ elastic deformation or elastic behaviour
When a spring is stretched and its length is permanently altered it is known as ___________ ____________ Inelastic deformation or inelastic behaviour
The limit of proportionallity of a spring is… the length a spring can be stretched to before it no longer returns to its original length
Sketch the Force (y) -Extension (x) curve for stretching a spring from no force to beyond its elastic limit. teacher to draw on board…
State the equation which links extension, force and spring constant F=ke
